Urethane vs Surlyn: Which Golf Ball Actually Lowers Your Score?

GolferGearShop Editorial · 5 min read

Cover material changes far more than greenside spin. Here is the data that matters for your handicap.

Urethane covers grip the grooves for high spin on short shots, but they also reduce driver spin thanks to their softer, thinner construction. Surlyn (ionomer) covers are more durable and typically launch higher with more spin off the driver. If you regularly hit greens from inside 120 yards, urethane pays for itself in stopping power. If you lose more than three balls a round, play a premium ionomer and keep the money in your pocket.
